Holy Family baseball had a busy schedule last week, but the games didn’t play out as the Fire hoped, and the team’s record now stands at 2-3 (2-1 in the MRC).
The Fire kicked off the season last week a 21-11 win over Belle Plaine on Monday. The following day Holy Family knocked off conference foe Norwood Young America, 12-2. Pat Balius pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs.
The momentum couldn’t carry the Fire through their matchup against Jordan, and the team suffered their first loss 10-0.
Two additional Fire losses came on Saturday against solid 3A teams Prior Lake and Minneapolis Southwest.
In a weekend tournament at Mankato East, Holy Family jumped on Prior Lake for five runs in the top of the first inning and knocked out the Laker starting pitcher.
However, Prior Lake’s bats mounted a 12-9 lead and despite Holy Family tying the game at 12 in the top of the sixth inning, Prior Lake went on to win 18-13.
Sophomore Miles Campbell made his varsity debut against Minneapolis Southwest, giving up six runs early in the game, but settling down to pitch a solid six innings. The Fire made a late run for the lead but ended up short in the 8-5 loss. Both Prior Lake and Minneapolis Southwest remain undefeated in their respective schedules.
The Fire fell 5-3 to Sibley East on Monday. Bennett Dragos had three hits, with Eric Koehler adding a single and double.
On the season, Balius is off to a good start with a .353 batting average and nine runs scored. He also is 9-for-9 on stolen bases. Tony Bauer is hitting .500 and has also thrown out three base stealers. John Anderson is leading the team with 11 RBI while hitting .333. As a team, the Fire is hitting .320 with 13 extra-base hits and 26 stolen bases.
