Not all the results have been turned in, but after chatting with John Wongdock of the Victoria Fire Department, Sunday's event drew more than 600 families and anglers of all ages, even a few dogs.
"We drilled 740 fishing holes (in Stieger Lake)" Wongdock said. ""There were only 55 that weren't used. As far as I'm aware, and what I've heard from the other firemen, this is the largest crowd we've ever drawn in the 25-30 years of having the contest.
Temperatures were in the high 20s, but a steady brisk wind made it feel colder. And Wongdock thanked the public for coming out on Super Bowl Sunday. Having the event from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. enabled families to come out and do something before going home for the 5 p.m. Super Bowl game, he said. "It worked out great."
Wongdock will be forwarding the Victoria Town Square the results of the fishing contest, and a list of the winners. Check back later in the week.
