Students at Victoria Elementary School enjoyed an early celebration of Chinese New Year on Dec. 18. Performers from the Chinese American Association of Minnesota came to the school to perform music, dance, and talk about Chinese New Year. Above, Malcolm Peterson as the Lion, thrilled students with acrobatics. Lisa Veronneau played the a Chinese zither. Hong Chen and Veronneau drummed for the Lion Dance. The Lion lifted a student in his mouth, then gently released him as classmates screamed, then cheered. The program is part of a year-long program at the school called World Adventures, coordinated by Sarah Peterson. Students are learning to build community, grow in the sense of their own culture and others, and make personal connections with and be inspired by other cultures.
