As candidates prepare to head into the home stretch for this year’s early primary election on Aug. 10, one topic that is rising to the top of many lists is the tax climate in Carver County.
There will be contested primary elections for two County Board seats.
And there are divergent views on whether the County Board has been good stewards of taxpayer dollars. (See the candidates’ answers on their view of the tax climate in the county on page 8).
A primary election will be conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 10. There will be two county commissioners races on ballots in Carver County: District 1 and District 3.
Carver County Board District 3 covers the city of Carver, Chaska Ward 1 and Chaska Ward 2, precincts 1 and 2, and the city of Victoria. The candidates are Debbie Boe, Randy Maluchnik (incumbent), Kevin Masrud and Jay Swenson. The two candidates who receive the most votes in the primary race will be on the ballot in the November general election.

Let’s pretend that your adult children have just told you that you shouldn’t drive any longer; or worse, a judge has given you the same sentence. Other than failing health, giving up the keys to your car is the most serious threat to independent living. Surrendering the keys without an alternative plan can lead to loneliness and depression, which can lead to poor health. Knowing independence during our entire adult lives, suddenly being housebound can be a personal catastrophe.
The Senior Commission recently appointed Sis Coenen to the commission. Currently the senior commission has nine members and is allws up to eleven members. Sis Coenen’s term will end March 31, 2012.

The city has also applied for a grant that would enable planning for the city’s 13.5 acres, west of the central downtown district. The Metropolitan Council has funding for the Livable Communities Demonstration Account for 2010, and has a new category called the Pre-development Grant.

A new state law that takes effect this election cycle builds in more time for military personnel and others who are overseas to participate in this November’s general election.
To accomplish that, the date for the primary election has been moved up a month. Instead of the second Tuesday of September, the primary will be on the second Tuesday of August.

River City Days, Chaska’s unofficial mid-summer mark, is coming earlier
than usual this year.
The core of Chaska’s big city celebration will still be the last full
weekend of July. However, in an effort to create more family and
recreational events, organizers will also be holding activities in the
events leading up to July 23-25, according to organizer Tim Sebenaler.
It’s a way to get families “off the couch,” he said.
Carver County Sheriff Bud Olson said there were four residential
burglaries that occurred in rural Carver County on July 12.
