They’re hoping for clear skies and mild weather. Monica Hartman
of Victoria and her business
partner Cathy Jo Menssen of Waconia are hosting the Victoria Bayfront Art Fair
this Saturday. The art fair will take place along the land and amphitheatre
that front Stieger Lake
in downtown Victoria.

The art fair will feature artists from the area—potters,
photographers, jewelers, and carvers are among those who will display and sell
their work.

Volksfest contest winners announced

The 2008 Volksfest began with an early morning bike tour and 5K
run, and ended with a late night  dance
in the big tent downtown. In between, there were plenty of winners in a variety
of activities.

One more resident has filed to run for city council. Tom O'Connor filed with the city clerk on Monday. To date there are five candidates running for two council seats. They include Jay Swenson and Tom Strigel, and Councilors Kim Roden and Rick Tieden who are running for re-election to the city council.

Mayor Mary Hershberger Thun is running for re-election as mayor and as of Monday afternoon, still unchallenged.



Convocation circle is HFCHS's 'signature' hole

The seed for the Convocation Circle
project was planted shortly after former Holy Family Catholic High School
President Frank Miley left a year ago. School leadership sought a way to honor
Miley’s tenure at HFCHS and his significant contribution of successfully
appealing to the Archdiocese of St. Paul to have HFCHS become a Lasallian

Fresh Seasons Market is one step closer to breaking ground in
downtown Victoria. Last Thursday,
the Victoria City Council reviewed and approved the preliminary plat for Fresh
Seasons Market, a 28,000 square foot grocery store and drugstore to be located
between The Alley and Quamoclit Street.
The council also approved the vacation of Quamoclit and Alleyway for the
development.

Just released is the first clue for the first ever Volksfest Medallion Hunt. Victoria residents should recieve postcards today or tomorrow with this clue.

Put on your thinking caps (your GPS device if you are directionally challenged) and see how well you think you know downtown Victoria. If you've never ventured downtown, well, it's about time, doncha think? Thre's $250 with someone's name on it.

Public hearing for golf cart use is Aug. 28

The Victoria City Council set Thursday, Aug. 28 as the date for a public hearing about an ordinance amendment permitting golf carts in Deer Run and the adjoining Laketown neighborhood.

The issue came up recently in a Deer Run homeowners association discussion. Victoria Sheriff’s Deputy Erick Boder said that there have been a number of reports of underage operators this summer.



Mayor will run for re-election

Victoria Mayor Mary Hershberger Thun announced Friday that she will run for re-election. Currently, the mayor's seat (two-year term) and two council seats (each is a four-year term) are up for election. Council seats are currently held by Kim Roden and Rick Tieden. Tieden said earlier this summer that he would seek re-election. At that time Roden had not made her decision to run for re-election..

Filing for city council seats opens at 8 a.m. Aug. 26 and closes at 5 p.m.on Sept.9. Filing fee is $2.

 



Prudential honors Victoria man for volunteerism

The Carver County Historical Society (CCHS) congratulated Ron Holtmeier
for receiving the Prudential CARES Volunteer Grant for volunteer service for
the historical society. Holtmeier has logged many volunteer hours promoting the
Andrew Peterson Farm and Carver County’s
Swedish heritage. The Prudential Foundation donated $250 to CCHS in Holtmeier’s
honor.
